18. – 20. MAI 2023 MALZHAUS PLAUEN, SACHSEN
Dreieinhalb Jahre ist es mittlerweile her, dass wir das neunzehnte PITB im Malzhaus veranstalten konnten, Viren und Virologen sorgten dafür, dass es seitdem nicht mehr dort durchführbar war. Wir allerdings wollten schon das Zwanzigste noch schaffen! In 2023 wollen wir’s nun anpacken. Mittlerweile genießen Uli und Ute, die die Geschicke des Malzhauses über mehr als dreißig Jahre geleitet haben, ihren wohlverdienten Ruhestand, und die junge Leute, die mittlerweile das Zepter dort in die Hand genommen haben, sind ,wie ich erfahren durfte, sehr daran interessiert, dass wir alle wieder ins Malzhaus kommen! Das ist doch mal eine klare Ansage! So sind wir nun seit dem Herbst damit beschäftigt gewesen, für Euch ein vorzeigbares Programm zusammenzubasteln, und einen Tag vor der uns selbst gesetzten Frist ist es nun soweit, wir konnten alle Zusagen einsammeln. Wir sind froh, Euch im Mai das nachfolgende Line-Up präsentieren zu können:
Donnerstag, 18. Mai ab 21.00 Uhr: AoxoToxoa(CH)
Freitag, 19. Mai ab 20.00 Uhr: Goodwill Bluegrass Band(CZ), anschließend Mr. Morning(SWE)
Samstag, 20. Mai ab 19.00 Uhr: Mr. Morning, danach Goodwill Bluegrass Band, danach AoxoToxoa
Es ist uns erst im Nachhinein so richtig klar geworden, dass es diesmal ganz schön europäisch wird im Malzhaus! Die Schweizer Grateful Dead-Tribute Band AoxoToxoa ist mittlerweile an vielen Stellen neu besetzt, lediglich Bassist Michi Ineichen ist von der alten Band noch übriggeblieben. Demzufolge haben wir es da fast mit einer neuen Band zu tun, die aber zumindest aus meiner Sicht ebenso druckvoll agiert wie ihre Vorgänger, aber um Einiges verspielter daherkommt, davon konnte ich mich vergangenes Jahr in Weiden überzeugen. Das wird auf jeden Fall spannend!
Ebenfalls zumindest für PITB-Stammgäste alte Bekannte sind die Musiker der schwedischen Jamband Mr. Morning. Sie waren im Jahre 2003, also vor nahezu exakt 20 Jahren, das erste Mal beim PITB im Malzhaus zu Gast, da kommt die Erinnerung an die beiden damals für mich unglaublichen Konzerte sofort wieder! Mr. Morning spielen vorwiegend ihre eigenen Songs, gemischt mit einigen Stücken internationaler Rock- und Bluesgrößen auf ihre eigene, unverwechselbare Art. Sie werden am Freitag das Finale des zweiten Festivaltags bestreiten, und am Samstag als erste Band auf der Malzhausbühne stehen.
Im vergangenen Jahr besuchte uns zum PITB-Summer Special in Schneidenbach ein Neuling, Richard aus Ostrava in Tschechien, und der erzählte mir, dass in seiner Nachbarschaft ein Bluegrass-Musiker lebt. Neugierig, wie wir sind, haben wir uns natürlich die Musik der Goodwill Bluegrass Band im Netz mal etwas intensiver anschaut, waren positiv überrascht, und da stand für uns fest, die laden wir ein! Vergangene Woche kam sie dann, die lang ersehnte Zusage, und nicht nur das, unsere diesjährigen PITB-Neulinge werden nicht mit den üblichen fünf, sondern sogar mit sechs Musikern anreisen!
Lange genug hat es diesmal wieder gedauert, bis das Line-Up endlich steht, aber wir sind’s zufrieden damit, und fiebern jetzt schon den Tagen im Mai entgegen. Jetzt müsst nur noch Ihr alle am Himmelfahrtswochenende ins Malzhaus kommen, egal ob Euch das PITB bereits ein Begriff ist, oder nicht.

Bis auf das allmorgendliche Frühstück ist alles andere fast wie immer: Die kleine Parking Lot wird’s wieder geben, im Biergarten oder im Malzhaushof kann tagsüber akustisch musiziert werden, oder man kann einfach nur eine gute Zeit haben.
Bezüglich des Frühstücks allerdings habe ich mit Tobi vom Malzcafe lange diskutiert, und wir sind vorerst zu dem Entschluss gelangt, diesmal kein Frühstück im Malzhaus anzubieten, wie gesagt vorerst! Sollte Eurerseits eine Welle des Protests über uns schlagen, werden wir diese Entscheidung nochmals überdenken. Der Malzhausbiergarten wird ungeachtet dessen ganztägig vom Open-Air-Bühnengelände aus für Euch zugänglich sein. Was hat uns zu dieser Entscheidung bewogen?
Zuallererst die Dauerbelastung für Tobi und seine Crew. Er ist wie wir alle auch nicht mehr der Jüngste! Er würde sehr gerne darauf verzichten, zumal er’s ohne teure Pauschalkräfte nicht stemmen kann. Viele Gäste übernachten heutzutage altersgerecht in Hotels und Pensionen und frühstücken dort. Die Hälfte derer, die im Malzhaus und drumrum übernachten, essen aus Kostengründen lieber ihre eigenen Sachen. Bleiben die, die gerne im Malzhaus frühstücken würden. Für die gibt’s zumindest am Freitag und am Samstag die Plauener Stadtgalerie mit all ihren Möglichkeiten, die ist in fünf Gehminuten erreicht. Und am Sonntag wie auch an den anderen Tagen kann man in der Strassberger Straße gleich nebenan im Cafe Heimweh oder aber am Klostermarkt im Cafe Trömel richtig gemütlich frühstücken. Am Sonntag morgen werdet Ihr zudem im Malzcafe dann schon einen Kaffee bekommen, da wird dann vor Eurer Abreise auf jeden Fall jemand da sein. Für den Fall, dass Euch das bisher geschilderte Angebot nicht ausreichend ist, stehen wir noch mit den Leuten von Plauen’s Jugendherberge Alte Feuerwache in Verbindung, um Euch dort eine Frühstücksmöglichkeit eröffnen zu können. In jedem Fall würde ein eventuelles Frühstück sowohl in der Alten Feuerwache, als auch im Malzhaus, wenn Ihr das denn unbedingt wollt, um die 9 – 10 Euro pro Tag und Person kosten! Das soll’s an Erklärungen dazu gewesen sein, schauen wir mal, wie Ihr denn so reagiert, dann sehen wir weiter.
Übernachten könnt Ihr in einem eigens hergerichteten Schlafsaal des Malzhauses oder auf der überdachten Open-Air Bühne (Schlafsack + Isomatte mitbringen). Stellplätze für Wohnmobile befinden sich unmittelbar am Malzhaus. Darüber hinaus haben wir in der Jugendherberge Alte Feuerwache, ca. 300 m vom Malzhaus entfernt, noch ein Kontingent von 10 – 12 Betten in Drei- und Vierbettzimmern für Euch reservieren können. Eure Schlafplätze im Schnarchsaal, auf der Open-Air-Bühne oder in der Alten Feuerwache reserviert Ihr bitte ausschließlich über uns! Zeltplätze haben wir auf dem Malzhausgelände leider nicht mehr zur Verfügung. Das Malzhaus liegt am Rande der Innenstadt. Vom Oberen Bahnhof gibt es Straßenbahnverbindungen. Plauen liegt verkehrsgünstig an der A 72 und unweit der A 9 (Berlin-Nürnberg), Abfahrt Schleiz.

18. – 20. MAY 2023, MALZHAUS PLAUEN, SAXONY
It’s been three and a half years since we enjoyed the 19th Playing in The Band (PITB) at the Malzhaus. Viruses and virologists have ensured that it has not been possible there since then. However, we wanted to do the twentieth show! In 2023 we will tackle it now. In the meantime, Uli and Ute, who have managed the Malzhaus for over thirty years, are enjoying their well-deserved retirement and the young people who have taken over are very interested in that we all coming back to the Malzhaus! That’s a clear statement! Since autumn we have been busy organizing a fantastic show for you and we were able to finish the programming a day before the date we set. We are pleased to be able to present the following line-up to you in May:
Thursday, May 18th, 9 p.m.: AoxoToxoa (CH)
Friday, May 19th, 8 p.m.: Goodwill Bluegrass Band (CZ), then Mr. Morning (SWE)
Saturday, May 20th, 7 p.m.: Mr. Morning, then Goodwill Bluegrass Band, after that AoxoToxoa
This time it will be very European in the Malzhaus! The Swiss Grateful Dead tribute band AoxoToxoa was replaced in many places, only bassist Michi Ineichen remained from the old band. So we’re dealing with an almost new band, which in my opinion acts just as powerfully as their predecessors, but is more playful. I was able to convince myself of this last year in Weiden. This will definitely be exciting!
Also old friends are the musicians of the Swedish jam band Mr. Morning. 20 years ago, they performed for the first time at the PITB in the Malzhaus. It immediately brings back memories of the two shows, which I really liked back then! Mr. Morning mainly play their own songs, mixed with some pieces of international rock and blues greats in their own distinctive way. They will play the finale of the second festival day on Friday and will be the first band on the Malzhaus stage on Saturday.
Last year a newcomer, Richard from Ostrava in the Czech Republic, visited us for the PITB Summer Special in Schneidbach. He told me that a bluegrass musician lived in his neighborhood. Curious as we are, we listened to the music of the Goodwill Bluegrass Band online and were hooked. We knew we were going to invite them! The long-awaited confirmation finally came last week. In addition, this year’s PITB newcomers will not arrive with the usual five, but even with six musicians!
Again, it took a long time until the line-up was finally fixed, but we are really satisfied with it and are already looking forward to the fantastic days in May. Now all you have to do is come to the Malzhaus on the Ascension weekend, whether you already know the PITB or not.

Except for breakfast, everything else is pretty much the same as always: the small parking lot will be back. In the beer garden or in the Malzhaushof you can play acoustic music during the day or just have a good time.
After talking to Tobi from the Malzcafe, we decided not to offer breakfast in the Malzhaus this time. If many of you protest, we will reconsider the decision. However, the Malzhaus beer garden is accessible to you all day from the open-air stage area. Why did we decide to do this?
First of all, it’s a lot of stress for Tobi and his crew. Like all of us, he’s not the youngest anymore! He would very much like to do without this, especially since he needs additional expensive staff for it. Nowadays, many guests stay in age-appropriate hotels and guesthouses and have breakfast there. Half of those who spend the night in and around the Malzhaus prefer to eat themselves for cost reasons. That leaves those who want to have breakfast in the Malzhaus. For them there is the Plauener Stadtgalerie with all its possibilities on Friday and Saturday, which can be reached on foot in five minutes. And on Sunday, as on the other days, you can have a really cozy breakfast in Strassberger Straße right next door in Cafe Heimweh or in Cafe Trömel on Klostermarkt. On Sunday morning before departure there is definitely a coffee in the Malzcafe. If this offer did not meet your expectations, we are still in contact with the people of the Plauen youth hostel Alte Feuerwache in order to be able to offer you breakfast there. In any case, if you really want it, breakfast costs around 9-10 EUR per day per person, both in the old fire station and in the Malzhaus! That should have been all the explanations. We’ll see how you react and then we’ll see.
You can spend the night in a specially prepared dormitory in the Malzhaus or on the covered open-air stage (bring your own sleeping bag and roll mat). Parking spaces for mobile homes are located directly at the Malzhaus. In addition, we have been able to reserve a contingent of 10 – 12 beds in three and four-bed rooms for you in the youth hostel Alte Feuerwache, approx. 300 m from the Malzhaus. Please reserve your sleeping places in the snoring hall, on the open-air stage or in the old fire station exclusively through us! Unfortunately, we no longer have campsites available on the Malzhaus site. If you want to get a room yourself, you can do so via the tourist information in the Plauen town hall, phone: 03741-2911027.
The Malzhaus is located on the outskirts of the city center. There are tram connections from Oberen Bahnhof. Plauen is conveniently located on the A 72 and not far from the A 9 (Berlin-Nuremberg), Schleiz exit.
